, ashleigh, from how angry they were on the house floor the minute they realized last night the speaker was not going to allow this to come up for a vote in this lame duck congress. so what happened was it just became -- it took on a life of its own. and by this afternoon the house speaker and the majority leader had a meeting right down here behind me in his office with members of the new jersey and new york delegation, the republicans, and in about 20 minutes it was done. he had it all laid out. he promised them that he would have a vote this friday on a small portion of it, $9 billion, and then by the first legislative day of the new congress, january 15th they will vote on the rest. and the same members, just like peter king is a perfect example, who were really angry, surprisingly personal, came right out and said you know what? that was a lifetime ago. we'll forgive and forget. we're fine with this. not thrilled that it didn't happen now but fine with waiting two weeks. >> so you know, i don't know if i just got so wound up in the fiscal cliff conversation that i forgot about the

, ashleigh, the white house is welcoming the senate plan. we're expecting that the president will highlight a proposal that's actually been out for almost two years at this point. his blueprint for immigration reform. but when it was put out in 2011, it was seen much more as a statement, i think, ahead of the election more than a genuine push for immigration reform. he didn't really push it forward in any real way. so we're expecting to hear him highlight that, and i will tell you that obviously the hottest button issue has to do with the pathway to citizenship, what it would be for millions of undocumented immigrants currently here in the u.s. and the president has said he thinks they should register with the government, undergrow -- undergo background checks. they should pay taxes and a penalty, and they should learn english. i think we're still waiting to see as the details are flushed out in these plans as they become more specific, you would think obviously that whatever pathway the president is proposing is probably going to fall to the left of something that republicans have signed t

? >> well, ashleigh, today the children, the teachers, the administrators that survived the massacre had an orientation at the new school and tomorrow they will be going to the new school and it's very interesting. it's a middle school that is called the chalk hill middle school but it was mothballed a couple of years ago. so it's empty. the sign that says chalk hill on the bottom left-hand corner of the sign now says sandy hook elementary. the school has been changed. it's been retrofitted for the new students. the bathrooms have been made smaller for the smaller children. the desks from the old school have been brought to the new school. same teachers will be there. the idea is for the children to be as comfortable as possible. but it will be a very emotional day. dawn hochsprung, she was the principal of the school who was killed and beloved by everybody. a short time ago i talked to her daughter erica about the first day of school. she has mixed emotions about it. she's a very nice, kind woman and she's the spitting image of her late mother. >> she will be with them, you know. >> tha

? >> reporter: i will tell you, ashleigh, i think the white house considers how this fight went for them, the president was more effective than, say, during the debt ceiling. i think the tone we got during the debt ceiling was president obama was trying to position himself as a reasonable adult in the room, that he was trying to achieve somebody, and remember we saw him in the briefing room the day before this deal was sealed -- or the day before it passed the senate, and he was very hard on republicans. i think we're seeing him taking a harder tack. i think that will continue into the fight over the debt ceiling. the thing that the whi house doesn't like is they feel like a lot of this stuff is so unnecessary. this isn't something that ultimately. he can put that he extended a tax cut for the middle class, and that should be considered an achievement for him, but dealing with the debt ceiling, these aren't huge sweeping achievements he can say, look, i did something amazing. if it's something like entitlement reform, tax reform, that might be an achievement, but patching these things th
